Tao Xingzhi is one of the most influential figures in modern Chinese pedagogy. His life's work has profoundly influenced the shape of China's education system in the 20th century. As an educator, reformer, and philosopher of education, he promoted the idea of "life education" (生活教育), that is, connecting school with real life.
Tao Xingzhi was born in 1891 in Anhui province. He studied at Nanjing University and then at Teachers College at Columbia University in New York, where he encountered the ideas of John Dewey, an American philosopher and educator. Dewey's pragmatism and emphasis on hands-on teaching profoundly influenced Tao's thinking about the role of schools in society.
On his return to China, Tao became an active promoter of educational reform. He criticized the traditional Confucian system and focused on educating the general population, especially the rural population and women.
In the 1930s, he founded the Mass Education Movement, which aimed to make basic education available to all people regardless of social background. Tao promoted simple, practical schools and community-based educational activities that focused on literacy, hygiene, agriculture, and civic responsibility.
In 1934, he founded the Xiaozhuang School, an experimental rural school that combined practical skills with academic education. Students participated in agricultural production while learning theory, which had a direct impact on community and regional development.
Tao Xingzhi believed that education was not separate from everyday life, but should be part of it. His ideas were ahead of the times and in line with modern approaches to community and lifelong learning. Despite difficult historical conditions (Japanese occupation, civil war), he remained active until his death in 1946.
His quote "Every man is a teacher, every place is a school, every moment is an opportunity to learn" sums up his approach to pedagogy.
