The Gate of Heavenly Peace (Tian'anmen) is one of the most important historical buildings in Beijing. Located at the northern edge of Tian'anmen Square, it serves as the main entrance to the Forbidden City. It was built in 1417 during the Ming Dynasty, and its current form dates from a 17th century reconstruction during the Qing Dynasty.
The gate is 33.7 meters high and its dominant feature is a wide terrace with a distinctive red façade and a golden roof covered with glazed tiles. On the façade is the famous portrait of Mao Zedong, which has been displayed here since 1949.
The Tiananmen Gate has played a pivotal role in Chinese history. In 1949, Mao Zedong proclaimed the establishment of the People's Republic of China here. Tian'anmen Square in front of the gate has also witnessed many historical events, including the 1989 protests.
Today, the gate is one of the most visited landmarks in China, and its architectural style, ornate columns and detailed reliefs exemplify traditional Chinese aesthetics. Access to the gate's terrace provides a view of the entire Tian'anmen Square and the surrounding historic buildings.
