The National Institute of the Peasant Movement (NIRH) in Kwangzhou was a key educational institution in the early phase of the Chinese revolutionary movement. Founded in 1924 as part of a collaboration between the Communist Party of China (CPC) and the Kuomintang, the institute served to educate peasant leaders to spread revolutionary ideas in the countryside.
Structure and Teaching
The Institute offered several teaching programs focused on political, economic, and organizational issues of rural people. The main areas of study were:
Among the institute's alumni were prominent Chinese revolutionaries, including Mao Zedong, who served as one of its chief lecturers. The institute's programs laid the groundwork for the mass peasant movement that would have a profound impact on China's political development in the decades that followed.
Dissolution of the Institute
In 1927, following a split between the Communist Party of China and the Kuomintang, the institute was closed as part of a broader crackdown on leftist movements. However, its ideas continued to shape the agrarian policy of the People's Republic of China after 1949.
Today, the former Kwangzhou Institute building is a preserved historical site and serves as a museum charting the early days of the Chinese Revolution.
