Banco da China issues special banknotes in Macau every year to celebrate the Chinese Lunar New Year. For 2019, which was the year of the pig, the bank has prepared a limited edition of 10 Patacas banknotes (10 MOP). The main motif is the symbolism associated with the pig - according to Chinese tradition, it embodies prosperity, happiness and abundance.
The obverse side features traditional Chinese elements and themes of the New Year celebrations, accompanied by a depiction of a stylised pig. The reverse side depicts a characteristic panorama of Macau with references to Chinese culture and heritage. The colour scheme is chosen to evoke the joyous atmosphere of the festive season.
These banknotes are not only legal tender, but also a sought-after collector's rarity. In fact, Macau, as a special administrative region of China, is one of the few regions in the world that issues special banknotes for each new lunar sign. This provides collectors and tourists alike with a unique souvenir and a reminder of the rich traditions of the Chinese lunar calendar.
