The second smallest country in Latin, bordering Brazil and Argentina, has the official name of Uruguay's Eastern Republic, with Montevideo as its capital.
The history of Uruguay's banknotes dates back to 1835, when pre-printed coupons with handwritten information similar in part to banknotes and in part to bank receipts were issued in Montevideo. The issue of the first banknotes in the approximate form we know today dates back to 1870. The issue features a fancy wave pattern instead of a straight cut on one of the short sides of the banknote and was printed by Bradbury, Wilkinson & Co. (England) - BWC.
There are currently fewer than 500 banknote types catalogued (as of 3/2021). Banknote collectors can track and include in their banknote album the latest issue of Urugay banknotes from 2020, when the central bank began issuing a new series of polymer banknotes.
