Category Ascension – postage stamps 1922–2025 presents a selection from the current range of stamp issues of Ascension Island, a British Overseas Territory in the South Atlantic. Our offer usually includes classic and modern postage stamps and series with motifs of history, nature, the monarchy, and local administration.
Ascension Island is an isolated volcanic territory in the South Atlantic, administratively forming part of the United Kingdom as an overseas territory. Its history is closely linked to maritime transport, military strategy, and communication routes between Europe, Africa, and South America. These factors significantly influenced the establishment and development of local postal services and, subsequently, the issuing of postage stamps.
For a long time, postal operations on the island functioned without its own stamps. Mail was handled through the British administration and marked with handstamps. A turning point came in 1922, when Ascension issued its first own postage stamps. These issues were intended exclusively for local use and from the outset carried a clear territorial identity, either through the inscription ASCENSION or motifs referring to the British Crown.
During the interwar period and after the Second World War, stamp production focused mainly on portraits of monarchs, state symbols, and basic definitive series intended for everyday postal use. Gradually, thematic issues also appeared, reflecting the island’s geography, local fauna and flora, and the strategic importance of Ascension in the Atlantic region.
From the second half of the 20th century, Ascension postage stamps became sought-after collectors’ material. Issues are technically well produced, often printed in limited quantities, and thematically attractive. Frequent themes include space research, military and air bases, nature reserves, seabirds, turtles, and significant historical events connected with British administration of the territory.
After 2000, stamp issuing has continued according to regular emission plans. Modern issues from 2000–2025 combine traditional philatelic themes with new graphic approaches and are aimed not only at postal use but also at the international collectors’ market. As a result, Ascension postage stamps form a coherent and long-term monitored philatelic field.
