Sultan Qaboos bin Said Al Said (1940-2020) was the ruler of Oman from 1970 until his death in 2020. He ascended the throne after a coup against his father, Sultan Said bin Taimur, and became the longest reigning monarch in the Arab world.
Under his leadership, Oman has undergone a dramatic modernisation and transformation from an isolated, backward state to a prosperous and stable country with a developed infrastructure, education and healthcare system. He instituted a policy of neutrality and mediated diplomatic negotiations between various states, earning Oman a reputation as a peacekeeping player in the Middle East.
Qaboos was known for his vision for development and strong connection with his people. He never had an official heir, and so upon his death, power was passed to his cousin, Sultan Haitham bin Tariq Al Said.
