Front page: Sir Moses Montefiore, Mishkanot Shaananim neighborhood with windmill (Jerusalem)

Sir Moses Montefiore (1784-1885) was a prominent British philanthropist, banker and one of the most prominent figures in the 19th century Jewish community. Known for his generosity and willingness to help those in need, Montefiore dedicated his life to Jewish communities around the world, particularly in the areas of education, health and social welfare. He was re-elected Mayor of London and was elevated to the peerage for his services to the public welfare.

Montefiore was also active in Palestine, where he funded projects aimed at developing infrastructure and improving the living conditions of the local Jewish community. His legacy is still alive today, not only in Jewish history but also in the broader context of philanthropy. Sir Moses Montefiore remains a symbol of dedication, faith and tireless support for human dignity.

Mishkanot Sha'ananim is the first modern Jewish neighborhood built outside the old city walls of Jerusalem in the 19th century. This settlement was created by philanthropist Sir Moses Montefiore, who wanted to improve the living conditions of the Jewish residents, then living in the cramped and often unsanitary conditions of the Old City.

Mishkanot Sha'ananim became not only a symbol of the new era of Jerusalem's settlement, but also an inspiration for other neighborhoods and the development of Jerusalem outside the Old City walls. The picturesque stone houses and the windmill that Montefiore built here as a source of income and a symbol of prosperity are a distinctive feature of the area. Today, Mishkanot Sha'ananim is a cultural and artistic center that hosts various events, exhibitions and conferences, and remains a popular destination for residents and visitors to Jerusalem.

Back page: Jaffa gate, Jerusalem

The Jaffa Gate is one of the eight historic gates of Jerusalem's walls and serves as the main entrance to the Old City. Built in the 16th century during the reign of Ottoman Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent, this important gate leads to the western part of the city and connects the Old City with the newer parts of Jerusalem. The Jaffa Gate takes its name from the ancient road leading to the port city of Jaffa, where pilgrims and traders came from. Today, the Jaffa Gate is not only a historical symbol, but also a living place that connects the past with the present. Around the gate are markets, restaurants and shops that attract both locals and visitors from all over the world. It remains the gateway to the fascinating world of the Old Town, where different cultures, beliefs and histories intermingle.
