Rullah Mousavi Khomeini (partly spelled Khomeini) was a prominent Iranian clerical leader and politician who played a key role during Iran's 1979 Islamic Revolution. He was born in 1902 and served as a Shiite scholar and religious leader for most of his life.
In 1979, Khomeini led mass protests against the regime of Shah Muhammad Reza Pahlavi, which resulted in his overthrow. Subsequently, Khomeini became the first supreme leader of the newly established Islamic Republic of Iran, which was based on the principles of Shiite Islam. His rule was characterized by strict religious observance and restrictions on many personal and political freedoms.
Khomeini died in 1989, but his legacy is still strongly present in Iran. His personality and ideas continue to influence political and social events in the country. Iranians in general consider him the father of the modern Iranian state, while abroad he is often seen as a symbol of conservative Islamic politics.
