The Dewoitine D1 monoplane, designed by legendary French designer Émile Dewoitine, represented a major milestone in the development of fighter aircraft after World War I. This all-metal monoplane, first flown in 1922, boasted a modern aerodynamic design and a robust structure that offered high manoeuvrability and durability. At its heart was an in-line Hispano-Suiza engine, which enabled it to reach speeds of over 240 km/h - an impressive figure for its time. Armament consisted of two synchronised 7.7mm Vickers machine guns, making it a dangerous adversary in aerial combat.
The Dewoitine D1 found use not only in the French Air Force but also in several foreign armies, a testament to its reliability and effectiveness. Its deployment on the aircraft carrier "Le Béarn" was proof of the successful adaptation of this machine for naval operations.
"Le Béarn", originally conceived as a Normandy-class battleship, was converted into an aircraft carrier after the end of World War I. In 1927, she entered service as the first ever French aircraft carrier and became a symbol of France's growing naval power. She was equipped with a hangar for more than 40 aircraft and catapults for rapid launching.
Her deck hosted both the Dewoitine D1 and other types of aircraft, making "Le Béarn" a key element in protecting sea lanes and demonstrating military power. Although she was never deployed in direct combat action, she served as a valuable training and transport ship during World War II.
The pairing of the Dewoitine D1 and "Le Béarn" shows how innovations in aviation and naval warfare changed the tactics and strategy of 20th century warfare. This tandem remains a fascinating example of French engineering and military history.
