Kōwhai is one of New Zealand's most prized Aotearoa trees, its bright yellow flowers and the birds that flock to them welcoming signs of spring. Some species are semi-deciduous, and their golden flowers appear before a row of small round leaves join them. The distinctive kōwhai flower is an icon that has appeared several times on postage stamps and coins, including the former two-cent New Zealand coin.
This coin is the third in a new series of commemorative coins called "Discover New Zealand" that showcase New Zealand's unique natural beauty.
