Antonín Holý was one of the most important Czech scientists of the 20th century, whose work in organic chemistry and pharmacology had a global impact. His research focused on antiviral and anticancer diseases, and he made major contributions to the development of major diseases such as HIV/AIDS, hepatitis B and herpes.
Holý developed unique nucleotide analogues that became the basis for several key drugs. Collaborations with the US company Gilead Sciences led to the development of drugs such as tenofovir, used in HIV therapy, and adefovir for the treatment of hepatitis B. Thanks to his work, millions of patients today have access to effective treatments that save and improve lives around the world.
His scientific achievements have been recognized with many prestigious awards, including international accolades. Yet he remained a humble man who considered his success primarily a service to society. Prof. Holý was a member of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic, and his scientific legacy continues in the form of applied research and medicines that save lives long after his death.
To this day, his name is associated with the best of Czech science - tenacity, precision and a relentless search for solutions to global problems.
