Sir Nicholas Winton (1909-2015) was a British stockbroker and aid worker who, in 1939, saved 669 mostly Jewish children from occupied Czechoslovakia from being transported to concentration camps by arranging for them to travel by train to the United Kingdom. His heroic feat remained unknown for nearly half a century until his wife Grete discovered a detailed scrapbook in the attic of their home in 1988 containing lists of the children, including the names of their parents and the addresses of the families who had taken them in.

Winton was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize three times, but never won it. In 2014, the last time he was in the Czech Republic, President Miloš Zeman awarded him the Order of the White Lion. He died on 1 July 2015 at the age of 106.
The planet Winton, discovered at the South Bohemian Observatory in Klet, is named after Nicholas Winton. In 2009, on the occasion of the 70th anniversary of his rescue, a special "Winton Train" was dispatched from Prague to London, transporting some of the then-rescued children and their families along the original route.
Winton's story has inspired a number of documentaries and films, including the internationally acclaimed 2002 documentary "The Power of Humanity". His humility and commitment to helping others made him a symbol of humanity and courage in dark times in history.
