Sir Nicholas Winton (1909-2015) was a British stockbroker and aid worker who, in 1939, saved 669 mostly Jewish children from occupied Czechoslovakia from being transported to concentration camps by arranging for them to travel by train to the United Kingdom. His heroic feat remained unknown for nearly half a century until his wife Grete discovered a detailed scrapbook in the attic of their home in 1988 containing lists of the children, including the names of their parents and the addresses of the families who had taken them in.
