The Praga E-51 was a modern prototype of a very interesting and advanced reconnaissance and light bomber aircraft. The machine was flown on 26 May1938 with a three-piece wing and Armstrong Whitworth gun turret on the aft fuselage. However, the turret was causing major problems, particularly in the tail surfaces, so it was removed and an aerodynamically favourable gunnery platform was added aft. Nevertheless, it continued to exhibit some deficiencies that were not reliably resolved until the German occupation in 1939. After the occupation of the rest of Czechoslovakiathe Germans seized the machine and on 21 June 1940 handed it over to their military experts and designers in Rechlin for examination.
