HTMS Chakri Naruebet is a unique example of Southeast Asia's military naval power. It is the first and so far only aircraft carrier in the service of the Royal Thai Navy, and the first ever aircraft carrier in the history of the entire Southeast Asian region. Its significance goes beyond Thailand - it exemplifies the efforts to modernise the navy in the region, and is also a subject of interest to military historians and technical experts alike.
HTMS Chakri Naruebet was built in Spain by the Bazán (now Navantia) shipyard based on a modified design of the Spanish aircraft carrier Príncipe de Asturias. The ship was launched in 1996 and entered service in 1997.
Length: 182.6 meters
Discharge: approx. 11,500 tonnes
Propulsion: combined CODOG system (diesel and gas turbines)
Maximum speed: approximately 25 knots
Range: up to 10,000 nautical miles at economy speed
Deck: ski-jump for short take-off
The aircraft carrier was originally designed to operate the AV-8S Matador (Harrier) light fighter aircraft, which were purchased from Spain. However, due to maintenance and spare parts problems, the air component with these aircraft was later scrapped.
Currently, the ship serves primarily as a helicopter platform, using Sikorsky S-70B Seahawk or Bell 212 helicopters. It is also equipped with light defensive armament - close-in air defence systems (CIWS) and light guns.
The aircraft is also equipped with light guns.
Although HTMS Chakri Naruebet does not conduct routine combat patrols like other aircraft carriers of the world's navies, it primarily serves humanitarian missions, search and rescue operations, and maritime training.
She has been prominent in disasters such as floods or cyclones- for example, in the relief efforts following the 2004 tsunami. It is also a symbol of national prestige and regularly participates in ceremonial and international exercises within ASEAN.
The presence of HTMS Chakri Naruebet represents Thailand's efforts to strengthen its defence autonomy and diplomatic influence in the South Pacific and South China Sea. Although it is a smaller aircraft carrier without a current fighter deployment, its strategic value is primarily in the areas of mobility, command capabilities, and support to naval operations.
