This silver coin depicts the official declaration of war on New Zealand - 5 August 1914. When Great Britain declared war on Germany, New Zealand was drawn into the fray as it was still part of the British Empire. The design depicts the declaration of war by the Governor on the steps of the Library of the General Assembly, now known as the Parliamentary Library because Parliament burned down in 1907. In the foreground is a newspaper vendor selling the main headline of the day - war has been declared .
The coin is part of an issue of coins commemorating World War I. The coins were issued in 2014-2018.
