The Abbey of Royaumont, located in the commune of Asnières-sur-Oise, was founded in 1228 at the instigation of King Louis IX of France, later known as Saint Louis. As the largest Cistercian abbey in France, it quickly became an important centre of spiritual and cultural life.
The architecture of the monastery bears the typical features of the Cistercian style - austere but harmonious lines, a large cloistered courtyard and Gothic arches that give the space a noble character. Despite the loss of some of the original buildings, especially the church, the complex has retained its historical value. Among the best preserved parts are the cloister, the chapter house and the refectory.
The abbey has undergone various transformations over the centuries. After the French Revolution, it was abolished and its buildings were used for industrial purposes. In the 19th century it was rebuilt and during the First World War it was a military hospital. Today the abbey serves as a cultural centre, hosting concerts, exhibitions and literary meetings.
In addition to the architectural monuments, the abbey is surrounded by extensive gardens that reflect the historical evolution of the site - from the original monastic gardens to the romantic 19th century parks to modern landscaping inspired by medieval traditions.
Royumont Patio is not only a witness to medieval history, but also a vibrant centre of culture and learning that attracts historians, artists and architecture lovers alike.
