Place de la Bourse, one of the most important squares in the French city of Bordeaux, represents the pinnacle of 18th-century classical urban architecture. Located on the banks of the Garonne River, it is one of the key elements that contributed to the inscription of the historic centre of Bordeaux on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
The square was designed by the architect Ange-Jacques Gabriel between 1730 and 1775 during the reign of Louis XV. Its symmetrical design and elegant building facades illustrate the transition from the Baroque style to strict classicism. The dominant buildings are the Palais de la Bourse (formerly the Royal Bourse) and the Hôtel des Fermes, which served the economic and administrative purposes of the city.
In front of the square lies the Miroir d'eau, the largest water area of its kind in the world, completed in 2006. This shallow pool of 3,450 m² creates a spectacular mirror reflection of the facades of the buildings, which enhances the visual impression of the entire site. Its alternating modes - mirroring, mist and dry - attract tourists and locals alike.
Place de la Bourse remains the centre of Bordeaux's social and cultural life. Exhibitions, festivals and other public events are held here. Its strategic location and historical importance make it one of the most photographed sites in France.
This architectural gem illustrates Bordeaux's heyday in the 18th century and continues to fascinate today with its timeless elegance.
