Introduced in 1932, the Couzinet 70 Arc-en-Ciel has made an indelible mark on aviation history as a symbol of courage and progress. This elegant three-engined machine, whose name translates as Arc of the Thrust, was the brainchild of French designer René Couzinet. Together with legendary pilot Jean Mermoz, the Arc-en-Ciel became the first aircraft to successfully traverse the route between France and South America, opening up new possibilities for long-distance air travel.
The Couzinet 70 stood out not only for its aerodynamic shape, but also for its advanced technology. With a length of 15.4 metres and a wingspan of 25.5 metres, it was equipped with three Hispano-Suiza 9V radial engines with a total output of 1950 hp. This enabled it to reach a top speed of up to 250 km/h and a range of over 3,000 kilometres. For its time, it was an extremely powerful and reliable machine that made it possible to fly safely across the Atlantic.
The first transatlantic flight under Jean Mermoz took place on 12 May 1933 and became a milestone in aviation history. This successful mission not only demonstrated the capabilities of the Arc-en-Ciel, but also enhanced the prestige of French aviation. The elegant lines and distinctive design of the aircraft still fascinate aviation history buffs and model collectors today.
