In 1986, the Marshall Islands issued a series of five stamps (MiNr. 87-91) depicting selected species of marine gastropods that inhabit the warm waters of the Pacific Ocean. Each stamp depicts a detailed illustration of a specific species, not only representing the biodiversity of the area but also highlighting the importance of marine ecosystems.
Species featured:
- Chicoreus ramosus - This highly ornamented gastropod belongs to the family Muricidae. It is characterized by massive spiny projections on the shell that serve as protection from predators.
- Lambis crocata - A member of the family Strombidae, known for its elongated and curved projections on the edge of the shell. This species inhabits sandy and muddy areas of coral lagoons.
- Bursa lissostoma - Belongs to the family Bursidae. Its robust shell with a gently undulating rim provides effective protection from predators.
- Strombus sinuatus - A member of the genus Strombus, known for its characteristic elongated shell and active movement on the seafloor. This species prefers shallow coastal waters.
- Bursa bubo - This species is characterized by its strongly ribbed shell and wide mouth. It is an active hunter, feeding on small invertebrates.
