In 1985, the Czechoslovak Post commemorated the 350th anniversary of the founding of the University of Trnava by issuing a postage stamp. This institution, originally known as Universitas Tyrnaviensis, was founded in 1635 on the initiative of Peter Pázmány, Archbishop of Esztergom. Its foundation was part of a broader effort by the Habsburg monarchy and the Catholic Church to spread education and strengthen the Catholic faith in Central Europe during the Counter-Reformation period.
The University of Trnava was the first university in what is now Slovakia. Initially, it had two faculties - philosophical and theological - with teaching in Latin. Later, the faculties of law (1667) and medicine (1769) were added. The importance of the university went beyond the borders of the region and attracted students not only from Slovakia, but also from Hungary, Austria and other parts of the monarchy.
In 1777 the university was transferred to Buda (later Budapest) by decision of Maria Theresa, thus ending its original form in Trnava. Nevertheless, its legacy remains an important chapter in the history of Slovak education and culture.
The celebration of the 350th anniversary in 1985 was not only a commemoration of this historic institution, but also an opportunity to re-emphasise the importance of education, science and culture for Slovak society.
