The 1964 Winter Olympics in Innsbruck were the first Winter Olympics to be held in Austria. They were held from 29 January to 9 February 1964 and used 1,091 athletes from 36 countries. One of the biggest stars of the Games was Czechoslovak ski jumper Jiří Raška, who won the gold medal on the middle hill, a great success for Czechoslovakia. Raška's triumph was one of the most famous moments of the Games. The Winter Olympics in Innsbruck were also marked by innovations such as the creation of a new cross-country skiing facility and the hosting of the first bobsled and skeleton competitions at the Olympics.
