Johannes Kepler (1571-1630) was a German astronomer and mathematician whose discoveries greatly influence modern astronomy and physics. Kepler is best known for his three laws of planetary motion, which describe how the planets orbit the Sun in elliptical paths. These, known as Kepler's laws, were fundamental to the development of the heliocentric model of the solar system and inspired Isaac Newton to formulate the law of gravity.
