100x Iran (P 159c) 10 000 Rials banknote (2019) - UNC

The banknote with a face value of 10,000 Iranian Rials (Rials) with the portrait of Ruhollah Khomeini was one of the commonly circulated currency in Iran in 2019. The front side depicts the very face of Ayatollah Khomeini, who led the 1979 Islamic Revolution. Although it is a relatively low denomination, many Iranians still use it today for smaller transactions.

In the year 2019, for example, 10,000 Rials could buy the following:

• Simple snacks (e.g. a small bread or a cheaper sweet)
• Simple tea or a basic packet of water
• Short ride on public transport (depending on current fares)

However, due to high inflation and fluctuations in the exchange rate, the purchasing power of the film will have decreased significantly since then.

The Iranian central bank has therefore long been considering currency reform (switching to the toman and dropping a few zeros) to better navigate transactions and mitigate the psychological impact of high inflation. For the average citizen, however, the most obvious consequence of the currency's depreciation is the rising prices of everyday goods - and a note with Khomeini on it, once enough for a small purchase, now often serves only as change to supplement payments.
